The Plant
Vallisneria spiralis grows long, narrow, bright green ribbons. It is the slimmer, finer-leaved relative of Jungle Val, and it spreads quickly by sending runners across the substrate that sprout new plants. It is an easy, popular backdrop plant.

Planting Tips
Set it along the back of a tank of 10 gallons or more. Push the roots into the substrate but keep the base of the leaves above it. Snip runners that wander forward.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The tall leaves form a dense curtain where shrimp can rest and hide, and each ribbon gathers biofilm for them to graze. Because it spreads so fast, it pulls a steady amount of nitrate out of the water.
