One of the easiest carpet plants: moderate light, no CO2 needed. Grows faster and tighter with fertiliser.

The Plant
Staurogyne repens, a small-leaved green plant from Rio Cristalino in the southern Amazon, related to Hygrophila. It stays low and bushy, so it belongs in the foreground.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant
Origin: South America
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 3 to 10+ cm (after about two months)
Light: Low
CO2: Low

Planting Tips
Snip off the tallest upright shoots, and new creeping shoots will grow from the base and spread over the substrate. In low light it grows more upright and puts out fewer side shoots.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
A low, dense patch traps biofilm and fine food for shrimp to graze, and shrimplets shelter between the leaves.
