A porous red clay gravel. It doesn't change pH or hardness, so it is easy on Neocaridina shrimp, and plant roots grip it well. It holds its shape for years, so it never needs replacing.
Rinse it well first (it starts out dusty) and fill the tank slowly over a plate or bag to keep the water clear.
