The Plant
Salvinia natans, also called floating fern, is a fast-growing floating plant found around the world. It has green, cupped, ruffled leaves, sends out side shoots and can stand up to 2 inches tall. It is harder to find and a good swap for the more common Salvinia minima. You get one 3 x 2 inch clump.
Plant Care
Type: Floating · Origin: Worldwide · Height: Up to 2 in · Light: Low to medium · CO2: Not required · Temp: 65–82°F · pH: 6.5–7.6
Planting Tips
Float it in a tank of 5 gallons or more; nothing goes into the substrate. It reproduces quickly, so thin it out as it covers the surface. Check your state's rules before buying, and never release it outdoors.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
It takes up ammonia and nitrate and shades the tank, giving fry and small top-dwelling fish shelter near the surface.
