The Plant
Salvinia minima, also called water spangles, is a fast-growing floating plant from Central and South America. Its small, oval green leaves spread into a carpet on the water surface. It suits any aquarium or pond. You get one golf-ball-size clump of 40 to 60 leaves.
Plant Care
Type: Floating · Origin: Central and South America · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 60–82°F · pH: 6.0–7.8
Planting Tips
Float it in a tank of 5 gallons or more; nothing goes into the substrate. It reproduces quickly, so thin it out as it covers the surface. Check your state's rules before buying, and never release it outdoors.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
It takes up ammonia and nitrate and shades the tank, giving fry and small top-dwelling fish shelter near the surface.
