Hard to keep long term: as filter feeders they often starve in clean tanks. Needs fine sand, regular fine food near it, and no copper.

The Clam
The Opal Asian freshwater clam comes from Asia and has an oval shell in yellow to beige. It likes to bury itself in fine substrate and grows to about 4 inches. It is very peaceful. Choose 1.5-2, 2-3 or 3-4 inches. Some clams may show old shell damage from the wild.

Care
Temp: 60-85°F · pH: 6.8-8.2 · GH: 6-8 · KH: 2-12 · Tank: 15 gallons or more · Clams are restricted in some states, including Indiana, New York and Wisconsin. Check your state's rules before you order.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Clams pull leftover food and fine debris out of the water, which can help keep it clear. Be realistic, though: they are filter feeders, and in a clean, lightly stocked planted tank they often starve. Give them fine sand to burrow in, feed crushed invertebrate pellets or sticks near them, and never use copper.

Tank Mates
Good with: shrimp, snails and peaceful community fish. Avoid: puffers, which eat clams.
