Needs medium to high light and iron-rich fertiliser to stay red; it grows green and leggy in dim tanks.

The Plant
Ludwigia ovalis is a stem plant from Asia with broad, oval leaves. Underwater the leaves turn a marbled green with red undersides, with a soft pink look at the tips. It is easy to grow and takes a wide range of water.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: Asia · Growth: Fast · Height: Up to 12 inches · Light: Low to moderate · CO2: Not required · Temp: 75–82°F · pH: 5.7–7.8

Planting Tips
Plant it in the midground or background of a tank 15 gallons or larger. Trim it regularly and set the cut tops back into the substrate to grow more stems.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
It does well without CO2, which suits simple shrimp tanks. The wide leaves hold biofilm for shrimp to graze, the bunched stems give babies cover, and it takes up nitrate as it grows.
