The Plant
This Ludwigia comes from swampy ground on the Isle of Youth, a small island off Cuba, and is not often seen in the hobby. Its long leaves are marbled in red and green, and like other Ludwigia it can put out a yellow flower. It grows both above and below the water.
Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: Isle of Youth, Cuba · Growth: Very fast · Height: Up to 18 inches · Light: Moderate · CO2: Not required · Temp: 72–82°F · pH: 6.5–7.6
Planting Tips
Put it in the background of a tank 10 gallons or larger. With good light it shoots up fast, so plan on regular trims and replant the tops to thicken the stand.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
It grows into a thick wall of stems, which makes a safe hideout for shrimplets and molting adults. All that leaf surface collects biofilm, and fast growth means it pulls a lot of nitrate.
