Needs medium to high light and iron-rich fertiliser to stay red; it grows green and leggy in dim tanks.

The Plant
Ludwigia Dark Red is a stem plant with wide, spade-shaped leaves. Underwater the leaf undersides turn bright red, and the stem shifts from green near the bottom to red at the top. It is easy to keep and not fussy about water.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: North, Central and South America · Height: Up to 18 inches · Light: Low to moderate · CO2: Optional, recommended · Temp: 75–82°F · pH: 5.7–7.8

Planting Tips
Use it in the midground or background of a tank 15 gallons or larger. Trim it regularly, then replant the cuttings in the substrate to fill out the group.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Its broad leaves are wide grazing plates for shrimp, holding biofilm that young shrimp feed on all day. A thick group also gives shrimplets cover, and the plant soaks up nitrate as it grows.
