The Plant
Ammannia senegalensis, sold as copper leaf ammania, is a stem plant from Africa. Underwater it grows long leaves in shades of copper and green. It copes with a range of water conditions and is rated medium care.
Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: Africa · Height: up to 14 in. · Light: Moderate to high · CO2: Not required, but recommended · Temp: 75–82°F · pH: 5.7–7.4
Planting Tips
Set the stems in the midground or background of a tank of 15 gallons or more. Trim it often to keep it bushy. Any cut stem can be pushed back into the substrate to start a new plant.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The copper leaves give warm contrast behind blue, black or green shrimp. Grouped stems make a thicket for babies to hide in, the plant draws down nitrate as it grows, and its leaves carry biofilm for shrimp to pick at.
