The Plant
An African water lily that grows from a bulb and puts out big, triangular red leaves that pick up marbling as they age. It shows good color without CO2 or strong lighting, so it is a friendly first red plant. Left untrimmed, some leaves climb to the top and float like lily pads.
Plant Care
Type: bulb plant · Origin: Africa · Height: up to 24 in · Light: low · CO2: not required · Temp: 72–82°F · pH: 6.5–7.8
Planting Tips
Suits tanks of 10 gallons or more. Set the bulb on the substrate or press it in partway, never fully buried. Snip leaves heading for the surface to keep it bushy, and cut off rooted side shoots to replant.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The wide leaves give shrimp shade and plenty of surface for biofilm, and an established bulb takes up nitrate as it grows.
