The Fish
Orochi Medaka are a Japanese-bred ricefish (Oryzias latipes) strain selected for one thing: solid black, from nose to tail, fins included. They're at their best viewed from above, where the black reads as a clean, dark silhouette against a light bowl or pale substrate.
Shrimp-Safe
Adult medaka leave adult shrimp alone, but like most fish they will pick off very small shrimplets. Fine in a display tank; keep them out of shrimp breeding tanks.
A Note on Breeding
Medaka are egg layers. Females carry a small cluster of eggs, then stick them to plants or floating roots, and they'll spawn year-round under a steady daily light cycle.
Care Basics
Hardy and easy. Roughly 64–82°F and neutral to slightly alkaline water. Eats quality flake and micro pellets. A lid helps, since they cruise near the surface.
