The Plant
Melon sword (Echinodorus osiris) is a background plant from North, Central and South America with broad, oval, bright green leaves. It is very hardy and very easy, a good pick for a first planted tank. It is amphibious and will grow out of the water if it is never pruned.
Plant Care
Type: Background · Origin: North, Central and South America · Height: Up to 20 in · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 67–84°F · pH: 6.3–7.8
Planting Tips
Give it room in the background of a tank of 10 gallons or more. Prune it from time to time so the leaves stay underwater.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Its big leaves give shrimp wide surfaces to graze and shade the substrate, where shrimplets and small fish can shelter.
