Demanding: needs cool, very clean water, rich substrate, and a rest period when the bulb goes dormant.

The Plant
The Madagascar lace plant, also called the lattice leaf plant, comes from Madagascar. Its broad, long leaves grow as an open mesh you can see through, and it often flowers once settled underwater. It spreads from its bulb or from seed after it blooms.

Plant Care
Type: Bulb plant · Origin: Madagascar · Height: Up to 25 inches · Light: Moderate · CO2: Optional, recommended · Temp: 75–82°F · pH: 5.7–7.4

Planting Tips
Give it room in the midground or background of a tank 20 gallons or larger. Pick its spot once and leave it there, and keep water changes small and steady, since big swings and moving it set it back.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The lace leaves trap fine food and grow biofilm on every strand, so shrimp spend hours picking over them. Its large leaves also shade the substrate where shrimplets like to hide.
