The Plant
Broad-Leaf Ludwigia, also called water primrose, is an easy stem plant native to Central and North America. Its spade-shaped leaves run from light green to deep green or brownish red, with pink undersides. Beginners and seasoned scapers both reach for it.
Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: Central and North America · Height: up to 18 in · Light: Moderate · CO2: Not required · Temp: 72-82°F · pH: 6.5-7.6
Planting Tips
Plant the stems in a group toward the back or middle, since it can reach about 18 inches. A weekly dose of iron and trace elements brings out the warmer colors. Trim the tops and replant them for a fuller stand.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Stem plants take up nitrate as they grow, which helps keep shrimp water clean. A thick stand of stems gives baby shrimp cover, and the leaves grow biofilm for grazing.
