The Fish
Lame Tricolor (Sanshoku) Medaka look like miniature koi: a crisp white body with bold red-orange and black patches, topped with glittering "lame" scales that sparkle across the back. No two fish share the same pattern. Best viewed from above, where the glitter catches the light.
Shrimp-Safe
Adult medaka leave adult shrimp alone, but like most fish they will pick off very small shrimplets. Fine in a display tank; keep them out of shrimp breeding tanks.
A Note on Breeding
Medaka are egg layers. Females carry a small cluster of eggs, then stick them to plants or floating roots, and they'll spawn year-round under a steady daily light cycle. Pattern varies a lot from one fry to the next.
Care Basics
Hardy and easy. Roughly 64–82°F and neutral to slightly alkaline water. Eats quality flake and micro pellets. A lid helps, since they cruise near the surface.
