Moderate light and fertiliser; colours better with CO2. Can grow on wood, but sends out side shoots that need trimming.

The Plant
Hygrophila pinnatifida, a stem plant from India with deeply cut leaves that are brown and mottled on top and burgundy underneath. It grows 15 to 40 cm tall and 10 to 20 cm wide. It looks best in small groups against a plain background.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel before planting.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant
Origin: Asia
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 15 to 30+ cm (after about two months)
Light: Medium
CO2: Medium

Planting Tips
Pinch off the tops to push out sideways shoots and keep it compact; strong light helps it stay low too. Those side shoots grip wood and rock easily, so you can also grow it on hardscape.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The low, branching growth gives shrimp cover, and its leaves and the wood it grips give them plenty of surface to graze.
