The Plant
Cryptocoryne balansae is an easy, hardy crypt from shallow rivers in Thailand. Its long, wavy leaves run from green to brown and can reach about 12 inches. Trimming now and then keeps it full instead of tall and leggy, and once settled it spreads by runners.

Planting Tips
Plant the roots in the midground and leave it in one spot. Crypts can melt their leaves if moved or if water shifts suddenly, then grow back. Liquid fertilizer helps, and CO2 is a bonus but optional.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The crinkled leaves form a shady stand where shrimp graze biofilm and babies hide, and the plant soaks up nitrate between water changes.
