Medium to strong light and regular fertiliser; CO2 helps a lot. Turns bronze-red in good light.

The Plant
Blyxa japonica is a grassy rosette plant from shallow, nutrient-rich pools, swamps and slow rivers in East and Southeast Asia. It became popular through Takashi Amano's aquascapes in the 1990s. Its thin leaves sway in the current, which adds movement next to stiffer plants.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Rosette
Origin: Asia
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 10 to 20+ cm (after about two months)
Light: Medium
CO2: Medium

Planting Tips
Give it a spot with some water movement so the grassy leaves can sway. It comes from nutrient-rich water, so it suits a planted tank that gets regular feeding.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Biofilm builds up on the fine leaves for shrimp to pick at, and shrimp like to shelter around the base of each rosette.
