Almost unkillable in low light with no CO2. Grows fast and soaks up nitrate; prefers cooler water.

The Plant
Anacharis (Egeria densa), also called Brazilian elodea or Brazilian waterweed, is a fast-growing stem plant with small, thin, bright green leaves. It needs no CO2 and no strong light, and it is about as easy as aquarium plants get.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Growth: Fast · Height: up to 20 in. · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 72–82°F · pH: 6.5–7.5

Planting Tips
Plant the stems in the background of a tank of 10 gallons or more. When they reach the top, cut them and push the tops back into the substrate to thicken the stand. Some states restrict this plant, so check your local rules, and never release it outdoors.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Few plants pull nitrate out as quickly, which helps a new shrimp tank settle. The fine leaves trap biofilm and food bits for shrimp to graze, and a thick stand gives babies plenty of cover.
