The Snail
These are baby American trapdoor snails, about 1/4 inch when they arrive. As adults, the brown-green spiral shell can reach about 2 inches long and 1.5 inches wide, with a protective trapdoor. Most are captive-bred or farm-raised. They are hardy, slow, very peaceful and live up to 5 years. You get 5 snails. Some shells may show small flaws.
Care
Temp: 50–82°F · pH: 7.4–8.0 · GH: 6–8 · KH: 2–12 · Tank: 10 gallons or more
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
They graze algae and clean up algae wafers, invertebrate pellets, zucchini and dead plant matter, so less food is left to rot. They are very peaceful and very easy to keep. Once grown they get heavy, so keep them out of tanks full of thin-stemmed plants they could pull loose or snap. Never use copper.
Tank Mates
Good with: shrimp, other snails and peaceful fish. They also do well in ponds. Avoid: assassin snails, which hunt other snails, and fish big enough to eat them.
