The Snail
Red racer nerites (Vittina waigiensis) come from India and are one of the most sought-after nerites. The shell is mostly red and yellow, with racing stripes running all the way around, and the pattern varies from snail to snail. They are hardy, at work around the clock, and live up to 4 years. Pick your pack size when you add to cart. Some shells may show small flaws.
Care
Temp: 72–82°F · pH: 6.8–8.4 · GH: 6–8 · KH: 2–12 · Tank: 10 gallons or more
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Nerites are among the best algae eaters you can add. They scrub algae, dig under the gravel for more, and eat invertebrate pellets, zucchini and dead plant matter. They are safe with plants and shrimp. They lay eggs, but the eggs only hatch in brackish water, so they never take over a freshwater tank. Never use copper.
Tank Mates
Good with: shrimp, other snails and peaceful community fish. Avoid: assassin snails, which hunt other snails, and fish big enough to eat them.
