Slow to settle and fragile to plant. Needs good light and CO2 to carpet; avoid copper and heavy fertiliser.

The Plant
Utricularia graminifolia is a bladderwort, part of a family of meat-eating water and bog plants. Its thin, grassy green leaves grow into a soft, low mat, and small bladder traps show up soon after it settles in. It comes from nutrient-poor water, which is why it catches tiny prey. It is a foreground plant and one of the fussier ones to keep.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Carpet plant
Origin: Asia
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 3 to 10+ cm (after about two months)
Light: Medium
CO2: Medium

Planting Tips
Plant it across the front of the tank in small pieces. The mat usually stays around 2 to 8 cm tall.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The dense grassy mat holds biofilm and fine food for shrimp to graze.
