Grows easily, but needs medium to strong light and iron for the deep red. CO2 helps it stay compact and colourful.

The Plant
Rotala rotundifolia 'Blood Red', the reddest form of this rotala. Its stems grow upright to slightly arching and branch a lot. The red looks strongest when it sits next to light green plants.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant
Origin: Asia
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 5 to 20+ cm (after about two months)
Light: Medium
CO2: Medium

Planting Tips
It's easy and copes with low light and low nutrients, but the deepest red takes strong light and added CO2. Trim it regularly so light reaches the lower stems and water can move between them.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Red plants make blue, black and yellow shrimp stand out, and the many branches give shrimp plenty of surface to graze.
