Medium to strong light for the pink-red colour; fertiliser and CO2 help. Stays small and bushy.

The Plant
Hygrophila lancea 'Araguaia' is a compact stem plant with small leaves packed close together on the stem. Despite the Brazilian river in its trade name, it most likely comes from Japan and Hong Kong. Stems reach 10 to 20 cm tall and 6 to 15 cm wide, branch easily, and turn reddish brown to purple when conditions are good.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant
Origin: Asia
Growth rate: Medium
Height: 10 to 20+ cm (after about two months)

Planting Tips
Pinch off the stem tips now and then to keep it short and bushy. It grows at an average pace for a hygrophila.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Its dark reddish leaves make blue, yellow and other bright shrimp stand out, and the bushy stems give them lots of surface to graze.
