Ceratophyllum demersum

Almost unkillable: low light, no CO2, can float or be planted. It sheds needles when first moved.

The Plant
Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum), also known as Coontail, grows wild on every continent except Antarctica. It is one of the easiest aquarium plants there is, shrugging off a wide range of water conditions. You can let it drift at the surface or anchor it in the substrate. Each order is one bunch of 4 to 7 stems.

Plant Care
Type: Stem plant · Origin: Worldwide · Growth: Very fast · Height: Up to 36 in · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 62-82°F · pH: 6.0-7.6

Planting Tips
Use it in the background or as a floater. It grows quickly, so trim it often, and replant the cut tops to make the stand thicker.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Its fast growth soaks up nitrate and helps starve algae. The bushy needles catch biofilm and make a safe tangle for shrimplets, and it even handles unheated tanks.
