Easy in low to medium light with root tabs. Stays compact and spreads slowly by runners.

The Plant
Echinodorus grisebachii 'Tropica' (also sold as Echinodorus parviflorus 'Tropica'), a small sword plant that first turned up at the Tropica nursery in Denmark in the 1980s. It forms a low, spreading rosette of narrow, slightly puckered leaves in medium to dark green. It stays compact enough for the foreground or midground.

Comes as a Tropica tissue culture cup: grown in lab gel, so it arrives free of snails, algae, pests and pesticides. Rinse off the gel and split it into small portions to plant.

Plant Care
Type: Rosette
Origin: Cultivar
Height: 5 to 10+ cm (after about two months)
Light: 0.5 W/L
CO2: 6 to 14 mg/L

Planting Tips
Plant it in the foreground or midground. Swords feed mostly through their roots, so a root tab near the base helps.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
Its leaves collect biofilm for shrimp to pick at, and shrimp shelter around its base.
