Lemna minor

Grows in almost any tank and spreads very fast. Once it is in a tank it is very hard to remove completely.

The Plant
Duckweed (Lemna minor) is a tiny floating plant with small round leaves that knits into a green mat on the surface. It multiplies very fast and grows in almost any aquarium, and in ponds too. You get a clump about the size of a golf ball.

Plant Care
Type: Floating · Growth: Very fast · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 60 to 82°F · pH: 6.0 to 7.8

Planting Tips
Just float it on the surface. Scoop out the extra every week or so, so light still reaches the plants below. Never dump spare duckweed outdoors or down a drain that leads to open water.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
It pulls ammonia and nitrate straight from the water, shades the tank, and its hanging roots give shrimplets and fry cover near the surface. Shrimp often graze the biofilm on those roots too.
