The Plant
Banana plant (Nymphoides aquatica) gets its name from the cluster of fat, banana-shaped roots at its base. It sends stems up to the surface, where its round leaves float like small lily pads. Native to the southeastern United States and very easy to keep.
Plant Care
Type: Root cluster, surface leaves · Origin: Southeast US · Height: up to 12 in. · Light: Low · CO2: Not required · Temp: 70–82°F · pH: 6.0–7.8
Planting Tips
Place it in the foreground or midground with the bananas resting on top of the substrate or pressed in only slightly; burying them fully can cause rot. Trim the long stems if you'd rather keep the leaves underwater.
Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
The floating leaves shade part of the tank, and shrimp graze the biofilm on the bananas and stems. It is a fun, easy plant for small shrimp tanks.
