Hardy in almost any tank; breeds on its own. Keep the water above about pH 7 so its shell stays smooth.

The Snail
Red ramshorns have a flat, tightly coiled shell with a reddish tone. Most are bred in captivity today, though wild ramshorns live on every continent from the Americas to Africa. They move slowly, are always hungry and stay busy around the clock, eating algae, wafers, invertebrate pellets, soft dead plant matter and blanched zucchini. They can live up to about 3 years.

Care
Temp: 70–82°F · pH: 6.8–8.0 · Size: small · Tank: 5 gallons or more

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
They are peaceful, safe with even newborn shrimplets, and leave healthy plants alone while cleaning up leftovers and soft algae. Be aware that ramshorns breed fast. They lay small jelly-like egg clutches around the tank, and numbers climb quickly when there is extra food, so feed lightly and remove extras by hand if needed. Keep GH up for shells, and no copper.

Tank Mates
Good with: shrimp of any size, other snails and peaceful fish. Avoid: assassin snails (ramshorns are their favorite prey), loaches, puffers, crayfish and large cichlids.
