Chocolate Nerite Snails

The Snail
Chocolate nerites (Neritodryas sp.) are dark-shelled nerites from India that don't turn up often in the hobby. They are tough, handle a wide range of water and can live around 4 years. Some wild-collected shells carry small marks. Keep copper-based medications out of their tank.

Why Shrimp Keepers Like It
They graze algae nonstop and will dig into gravel after food, yet leave plants and shrimp alone. Top up their diet with invertebrate pellets or blanched zucchini. Their eggs need brackish water to hatch, so a freshwater shrimp tank never ends up overrun.

Tank Mates
Good with: shrimp of any size, other snails and peaceful nano or community fish. Avoid: loaches, puffers, crayfish, crabs and large cichlids, which eat snails. Assassin snails sometimes go after small nerites.
