Some aquascapes are built around one piece: a driftwood tree, a sculpted root arch, a stone landscape that looks like it was carved by a river. We call these centerpieces, and the best ones are made by hand, one at a time, by small independent makers.
Why we feature them
We breed Neocaridina shrimp, and shrimp love a centerpiece. Wood and stone give them a large surface to graze biofilm from, shade to rest in, and a place for moss and epiphytes like Anubias and Bucephalandra to grow. A single well-made piece can set the whole look of a tank, so you need fewer separate rocks and branches.
What to look for
- Aquarium-safe materials. Check the maker's listing for the wood type, stone and any glue or resin used, and ask the maker if it isn't stated.
- Size against your tank. Measure the inside of your tank, leave room for water flow and for your hand during maintenance, and remember plants will grow onto the piece.
- Prep before it goes in. Rinse and soak new wood until it sinks and stops clouding the water, and watch pH and hardness for the first weeks, especially in a shrimp tank.
- Room for moss. Rough bark, crevices and branch tips are the easiest places to tie on moss or wedge in epiphytes.
